Kea

The endangered Kea is one of the most intelligent birds in the world. This unique problem-solving parrot was crowned Bird of the Year in 2017. Wild keas only exist in the South Island of New Zealand, where they will form a pair bond and hold a territory for themselves that no other kea pairs can live. The Kea is considered taonga (treasure) to Māori, as they were seen as kaitiaki (guardians) of the mountains for the Waitaha Māori during their search for Pounamu (greenstone).
