Takahē

The South Island takahē is a flightless swamphen indigenous to New Zealand. Sadly, the North Island species were made recently extinct. These birds have special cultural, spiritual, and traditional significance to Ngāi Tahu, the iwi (Māori tribe) of most of New Zealand’s South Island. They value takahē as a treasure and they continue to act as guardians to protect the endangered species.
